 There are total of 12 sankranti throughout the year. Transfer of sun from one transit to another is known as sankranti. But out of these 12 the most important one is Makar Sankranti. As  sankranti is based on solar movement therefore Makar Sankranti has almost a fixed date. Makar Sankranti is celebrated mainly on  14 January every year but Makar Sankranti 2020 date is January 15. It also marks the termination of the Winter season and the beginning of a new harvest season.
Makar Sankranti is the day when the sun enters into the zodiac Capricorn or Makara. It is also known as Uttarayana Punyakalam and heralds the arrival of spring season.

History of Makar Sankranti

Sankranti is deemed a Deity. As per the legend Sankranti killed a devil named Sankarasur. The day next to Makar Sankrant is called Karidin or Kinkrant. On this day, Devi slayed the devil Kinkarasur.The information of Makar Sankranti is available in Panchang. The Panchang is the Hindu Almanac that provides information on the age, form, clothing, direction and movement of Sankranti.


What is Makar Sankranti?

Makar Sankranti is an auspicious day based on the movement of the Sun (Surya). ‘Makar’ or ‘Makara’ refers to ‘Makara rashi’ – the zodiac corresponding to Capricorn. ‘Sankranti’ in Sanskrit means ‘to cross into’ or the day when sun enters from one zodiac sign to another. So Makar Sankranti is the day when the sun enters into the zodiac Capricorn. It is also known as Uttarayana Punyakalam or the entry of sun into the Northern Hemisphere. The six-month long Uttarayana begins on this day.

Hindu God Worshipped on Makar Sankranti

Lord Surya is worshipped on the Makar Sankranti day and is a form of Nature Worship. Every living and non-living being merges with the Brahman and Sun is the Pratyaksha-Brahman or the Brahman that can be seen.

Why people wear black dress on Makar Sankranti 
Makar Sankranti is the last and coolest day of winter and the beginning of summer. Black color is known for absorbing heat. Wearing black keeps the body warm during the last day of winter.

What you should avoid on Makar Sankranti day

1) Don't take bed tea before bathing on Makar Sankranti day. It is believed on Makar Sankranti day one should take bath in any river and should offer things to poor, before eating.

2) You should not eat garlic, onion, chicken or egg on Makar Sankranti day.

3) You should avoid consuming alcohol on Makar Sankranti day. Rather you should eat khichdi, til laddo on this day.

4) On Makar Sankranti day don't let any beggar return empty handed from your house.
